Porkpickle vs. Jelly Belly: They are brothers.

First, listen to the free stream of the GREEN CAT album! This was the last in the original cat series, originally released as two separate cds, Green Cat, and Purple Cat, but now collected together for your enjoyment.

Porkpickle, Jelly Belly's brother Behold Porkpickle, brother to Jelly Belly, but not friend. Ever since they were little kids, Porkpickle felt inferior to Jelly Belly, who always got good grades, helped old people cross the street, volunteered at ye ole fudge shoppe…you name it. Everyone knew and loved . No one knew or cared when it came to Porkpickle. Jelly was the star quarterback in highschool, king of the prom of course, and then when he went to college he invented the degree program of Sugar at Yale and Oxford. Porkpickle was barely able to graduate , never had a girlfriend that didn’t live in “Canada”, and he had skin that seemed perpetually stuck in the pimply age of 13 years old. Porkpickle was not dealt the same hand as Jelly Belly, but somehow, using every dirty trick in the book, Porkpickle did indeed rise to power, albeit lesser than the role of Jelly Belly, who went on to become a Great Hero of society, but Porkpickle had found his niche in life, and it all fell into place that night behind the 7-11 when he met up with this cool cat that called himself .

had given Porkpickle what he was missing his whole life, and he gave it to him from the very first moment they met. Porckpickle had nearly given up on living, always second place to Jelly…what was the point in trying if you knew you were always gonna lose? Then he met Red, and instantly Red could see that Porkpickle had certain talents. Red put Porckpickle in charge of “collecting taxes” from , a peaceful people who loved most to eat food. Porckpickle was great at this. The Purple Poppers were a small people and Porkpickle was a giant among them. Red also put him in charge of the goon squad that he had assembled when he left the land of the Blue Cat after slaying him. With him fled several unseemly types, name among them the , , , T3K, just to name a few…and it was Porkpickle who was in charge of getting rid of . Red Cat knew the first move Jelly would make to try and catch Red was to find . He told Pork to stop his brother, to find Smart Doggie and kill him. Porkpickle said he would make it so…

yer average purple popper
Who will save us? cry , for they have lost their protector Blue Cat…

Little did Jelly Belly was to see Porckpickle when he came upon House of the Dog where Smart Doggie resided. Little did he expect to find that the Red Cat had already dispatched his minions to try to take out their only hope of locating the …there were a lot of things that were starting to surprise Jelly. It seems he had been asleep for too long. Well, the alarm clock just starting buzzing in his head… reached towards the heavens and called out for the Axe of Omenz. A flash of lightning formed and suddenly Jelly stood their wielding the most impressive pickle fork you have ever laid eyes on. Porkpickle and his minions took one look and decided to high tail it out of there…from behind the trees came the , wearing all Chicago Bulls gear, , casting a spell to transport the evil doers away, and with them Smart Doggie…and the hope of the people of the land of Blue Cat.

The birth, rise, death, and rebirth of Reverse Monster…(pt. III)

A Tail of two Cats: Red Cat & Blue Cat

feline pokery

That tapestry hung on my grandparents wreck room wall when I was 5 years old. I ended up inheriting it and in typical college house fashion, had it hanging as the center piece to the living room of 135 Easton Ave. along with a super classy inflatable moose head. Looking back, I am now convinced that the art you look at daily has an effect upon the mind, or at least this tapestry wove it’s ways into mythology of Reverse Monster. In fact, some might say it provided the first unifying vision to the song writing: It gave the often weird, goofy, and off the wall song topics a universe to exist within, a universe of good vs. evil, a universe of Red Cat vs. Blue Cat.

Upon close stoned examination of this tapestry, various members of Reverse Monster began to experience fantastical visions portraying the great conflicts that fell upon the Cats of The Poker Table, for many great battles were fought between the People of both the Great Cats after the day of the great betrayal…it all must have began something like this: One lazy Sunday evening, beneath a sky that held Hale-Bop comet, the group of feline friends gathered as was their habit to play cards. The usual nibbling of cat nip, admiring each other’s shiny furs, and drinking some gin and tonics went on. Things were as normal as ever. No one expected what came next.

The eyes are the window to the soul.

Lately, Red Cat had fallen upon bad times. Money was tight. The wife was nagging him daily: empty the litter, get a job, where was the money going to come from to feed his litter of little red cats…he was desperate. He lost his job at the truck yard. Scratching the thoughtIt's ALL in the cards boys and girls. ALL of it. post bare, he tried to come up with some money at the weekly poker games. His luck did not improve and he lost all the money he had, ending up losing more than he came with. Red Cat was now in debt to Blue Cat. Frantic, he waited until Blue Cat was on his way home from poker night and jumped him in a dark alley. No one knows exactly how it went down. Blue Cat’s body was never found. That was the last time Blue Cat ever won at poker night. Blue Cat folded in to the great dealer in the sky…

He was kind to all souls. <3 Blue Cat!!!

All of the people gathered for Blue Cat’s funeral for he was widely known and loved by all. Blue Cat was generous to the people, always making sure the people had enough to eat, enough work to do, and enough reasons to celebrate and rejoice that they were somehow set here on this earth and given this gift of life. Blue Cat was very wise and always gave out the best advice. Several tales of heroic deeds existed years before his death even, commemorating the grand deeds of the Blue Cat for his people.

Thousands came to weep at the place where Blue Cat was laid toRed Bastard. The Fallen One. rest. They came and they wailed and cried out to the heavens, who will protect us now? What will become of our land? It was obvious that something had to be done quickly. It was then that the Ancient Protector was Awoken. It was foretold that at the end of every Age, when times where darkest, that a sweet and gentle hero would be awoken from his slumber and would come unto the People, and lead them back into the Light. And so it was that the most pure and mighty, Jelly Belly answered the calling of the people. Standing before the quivering, grief stricken masses, and he said unto them,”Glaaaaaaaaaaaaaaad to Hellllllllpppp!”, the crowd erupting into an uproar of thanks and relief the shook the trees. Everyone knew that Jelly Belly was a man of Heart and would do his best to protect them. And so it was that the people chose Jelly Belly to lead them in the absence of Blue Cat.

Jelly Belly, Hero of the People.

The first order of business, of course, was the find Red Cat, and get some answers. In the chaos following the discovery of Blue Cat’s untimely death, no one had noticed Red Cat slipping away with a handful of cohorts, equally as dastardly and equally as eager to leave the land to escape their sordid pasts. The People could not find Red Cat anywhere, and were growing restless. So soon into the job, Jelly Belly began to sweat. He started to sing one of his favorite songs, for singing usually brought ideas into Jelly Belly’s head as if by magic. He often imagined there were elves in his brain that liked to be sung to and who would bring ideas and inspiration when he sang unto them. And so Jelly Belly sang, he sang from the bottom of his belly…”knick , knack, patty whack, give a dog a bone…” and then it hit him. He knew exactly who to seek out for help. In order to save this great land, Jelly Belly had to find Smart Doggie, for who else to better find a cat, than a dog? The only part remaining was to assemble a party of heroes that would travel with Jelly Belly to find Smart Doggie, and eventually, the Red Cat…who else would stand, and answer the call of the Blue Cat’s good name?

The birth, rise, death, and rebirth of Reverse Monster…(pt. II)

POSTED BY QBert on Dec 10 under Bio, Humor, Music

For your listening pleasure, as you peruse the next installation of the Reverse Monster Bio, may we present, the first official Reverse Monster album, Red Cat.

We were all learning a lot during these times. Some of us weren’t even musicians and had to learn as they went! But that was the spirit of Reverse Monster. All inclusive. No ideaz were shot down. Anyone was welcome to participate so long as they played by our rules, which were simply that the process was to be as spontaneous and inclusive as possible. No ownership over the music, just over your performance in the minute, pure and elegant, and untainted human music making…as natural as the insects and frogs that make up the beautiful night song of the summer. Granted, we were obsessed with being a bit weird, and the topics of our songs ranged from the Cat who play poker, Jelly Belly personified, teletubbies, Gary Coleman, Christopher Reeves (our apologiez to the offended) and a score of other t.v. and movie stars without exception. That made it even better.

We weren’t trying to tell anyone anything with our songs. Just maybe make them laugh, but at the very least, we always made ourselves crack up. No concept was safe to be left out of the joke, and it was all meant as a joke, but not to imply it was intended as shoddy or cheap music. Hearts and souls were literally, and with all the dxm usage probably alchemically transfered straight into the recordings of Reverse Monster. Listening to to Reverse Monster, today’s listening might hear a bit of Dan Deacon, or The Residents, or perhaps Ween. The songs are each like small comedy skits somewhat akin to Negetiveland or Firesign Theatre: singing jokes that try both to make toes tap and belly’s laugh and minds expand. Some say that one can attain enlightenment through laughter. Part of what Reverse Monster offered in its music was a combination of laughter and dancing…both of which have been used throughout human history by various spiritual practices as ways to attain certain heightened states of mind. I’m not saying way back then that we were doing this, or at least not intentionally, but looking back, and listening again, that’s what we did.

Like the best musics, there is some creative/spiritual energy that runs through the whole project, even when the songs are delivered in less than “professional” standards of sound, style, or song writing. But yet, there is something there in the music that elevates above some random silliness caught on tape. I can recall one session, a Halloween Night session, where many had drank DXM and were drinking in celebration of monsters and ghouliez. We started to chant the phrase “The cough syrup gods, they come on Halloween.” over and over again. Of course, as with everything we did then, we recorded it [alas, the actual recording is missing now tho...]. It was an intense experience, all of use chanting in unsion, arms over each others’ shoulders. Upon listening back to the recording a short while later, and a bit higher, Derspooky, who often sang and played some bass and keyboards in Reverse Monster, actually lost his ego and forgot who he was. Re-listening to the chanting somehow pulled him out of himself. He thought he was in heaven, and then hell, and then heaven again! Of course we took care of each other, so we assured him he was safe and with friends, but this is just one example of how a very spiritual moment got wrapped up in our recording sessions, and also on tape when we played.

Coming soon: There will be 2 more albums to come of old Reverse Monster songs, Bluecat, and the combined Green-Purplecat album. These will also be provided as free streams. Also, we’ve been lucky enough to locate a long thought to be lost video tape of one of our very first show ever. It was intense. We literally tore the stage apart with our playing! But that will come soon, we’ve had to mail it out to get digitally restored as it had been left unattended in a hot, dusty attic for some years now.

Also coming soon, a roster Reverse Monster members and participators, as well as a list of all the characters featured in the Reverse Monster Universe. Everyone from the ever lovable and multi talented Jelly Belly, to the equally talented, but often thwarted by chance Porkpickle, to the angelic Gary Coleman, to the low down dirty Red Cat. I know this makes absolutely no sense at the moment. But hang in there. The ride will be confusing, but it will be worth it. We will provide all of the pieces for you bit by bit. There is a plot to it all, and once you get it, you will never come back from the world we have made for you.

Those 3 entitiez pictured above are a representation of the cough syrup godz, although they can come in many shapes and forms. Beware, they are true tricksterz.

The birth, rise, death, and rebirth of Reverse Monster…(pt. I)

POSTED BY QBert on Dec 9 under Bio, Music

Listen to Reverse Monster’s early material, gathered in the Black Cat album. It’s a free stream, so knock yourselves out.

Reverse Monster was “formed” near the end of 1998 DEC, into Jan 1999 in the house located at 135 Easton Ave., New Brunswick, NJ. There were some crazy happeningz over at 135 Easton in 08905. I say “formed” because the band as such did not truly start as a band. In the beginning, there was just the music and the act of making it. A 4 track tape deck recording unit, some cheap mics, casio keys, and busted guitars. The house at 135 Easton held 8 inhabitants, as well as several people who hung around often enough that they might as well have lived there as well. Lots of 40 ozs and bottles of dxm where imbibed…life was so relaxed and open then…it was almost hard not to be creative. They were the craziest, sometimes happiest, but definitely the most magical times some of us had ever experienced in our lives. Never before had the freedom to create been so much in the forefront of our lives, literally sitting in our living room interspersed with the usual items of everyday life. The connection and bond of the people in this house was so strong, they were almost like an island unto themselves. A single nation of creation that swept it’s own nation silly. It was these folks who came together, out of boredom, out of seeking, out of a desire to occupy the emptiness with something real, something that took our minds away from the stupid games of this world and back to that place where being creative is the means and the end. Where the act of creation was the focus, the action of creating, being in that flow moment where you and the music are all mixed up into one moment, coexisting together, each expressing itself through the mere presence of the other.

Matching this philosophy, the music was often created in single takes. Various members trading off roles, recording parts on top of what the previous members had just laid down. No one was crazy about any rules, so if a person needed a second take that was fine…but the essence of that process, trying to nail your part on one take with little to know preparation, trusting only your ears and your ability to let oneself enter this trust musically. The music that was created often surprised us during these times. Who knew what type of song would pop out next? Styles were not important, in fact it is the complete lack of style consciousness that made the music so endearing. It all had a characteristic ReverseMonster sound no matter what style the track came out as, because we weren’t trying to sound like anything. We were just humans singing because we could.

Over the course of these early months for Reverse Monster, while recording mostly to 4 track, the tracks that make up the album Black Cat were created. They were compiled into Black Cat after the later albums Red Cat, Blue Cat, Green Cat, and Purple Cat were passed around to local music heads and were well received.

Listen to Black Cat . It’s a free stream, so knock yourselves out.

WARNING: Many of our lyrics, being spontaneous and delivered under the influence of something or other, may be offensive to some listeners. If you think you might be offended by a bunch of crazy nonsense, then by all means, save yourself from us, and press the stumble button again and keep your earz pristine and your mind sound.

Coming soon: More on the history of Reverse Monster, more streams of the original Reverse Monster albums, and BRAND NEW REVERSE MONSTER MUSIC!

Stay tuned Monsterz!
