Punxsutawney Phil, Groundhog Day, and men who dress as the Monopoly dude.
So, the day is here. We will find out if spring is coming early, or 6 more weeks of winter. My question is, what makes the groundhog so special in weather forecasting? What is behind this special talent of the pudgy squirrel? I mean, I’d eat the damn thing if it weren’t so darn cute. So, why are these stupid groundhogs special?
Well the answer could be there, but let’s explain it here.
In western countries in the Northern Hemisphere the official first day of Spring is about six weeks after Groundhog Day, on March 20 or 21. About 1,000 years ago, before the adoption of the Gregorian calendar when the date of the equinox drifted in the Julian calendar, the spring equinox fell on March 16 instead. This was exactly six weeks after February 2. Assuming that the equinox marked the first day of spring in certain medieval cultures, as it does now in western countries, Groundhog Day occurred exactly six weeks before spring. Therefore, if the groundhog saw his shadow on Groundhog Day there would be six more weeks of winter. If he didn’t, there would be 42 more days of winter. In other words, the Groundhog Day tradition may have begun as a bit of folk humor.
Alternatively, the custom could have been a folk embodiment of the confusion created by the collision of two calendrical systems. Some ancient traditions marked the change of season at cross-quarter days such as Imbolc when daylight first makes significant progress against the night. Other traditions held that Spring did not begin until the length of daylight overtook night at the Vernal Equinox. So an arbiter, the groundhog / hedgehog, was incorporated as a yearly custom to settle the two traditions. Sometimes Spring begins at Imbolc, and sometimes Winter lasts 6 more weeks until the equinox.
So there you go folks, not really a science for a big rat to come out of a hole. So have fun, and cheer for your fav Groundhog, squirrel, ferret, mole rat, or possum. All I know is when a bunch of grown ass men dress up as the MONOPOLY dude with the tophat, that is pretty damn stupid. I’ll be the thimble.

Rarely does a time come along when I am so moved by something, that I recommend it to others. First of all, I need to thank Catfish, for showing me this movie. I cannot thank him enough. Second, before we start trashing anything, let us remember that having an open mind, is an important step in being a rational human being. I must admit, before I watched this video, I had seen “Loose Change”, and “Loose Change II” and was not thrilled with these homemade documentaries. But this all changed about 2 hrs ago. Yes this movie will take about 2 hrs of your time, but trust me, it will change your life. I truly mean it. You don’t have to believe everything, but there is so much evidence out there of what is going on with our own government, that we must not ignore some of these hard facts.
Remember, I was a skeptic too, and I am questioning myself now. This evidence and the proof that lies in this video (which we will supplement here after the video, is not only eye opening, but a shock.) We are truly blind to our government. We need to get back our dignity and our freedom. We must not stop until we expose what the Federal Reserve and our government are doing. Please watch. I hope this is inspiring. Internet 69 Duuuude
No, not that 69…I know it makes sense to lump 69 and the internet together (does it really though?) but what I’m really referring to is the year 1969 and what people thought the internet might be like. For starters, it wasn’t called the internet yet, Al gore was only 21 and not yet finished with law school at Vanderbilt University, let alone in politics (and thus, sorry Mr President…you didn’t “take the initiative to create the internet.”) in 1969 when the government first commissioned ARPANET. Advanced Research Projects Agency Network, ARPANET was the world’s first functioning packet switching system, which most today consider to be the predecessor of today’s Internet. Here’s a nifty little video from 1969 that shows just how people thought computers might connect us…
Surprising how many things they sorta had right isn’t it?(As an aside though, you gotta love that the husband, on his own console, has to pay the bills his wife racks up on her console!)
Seeing how many of the predictions from then actually came into being, it makes me wonder, where do we, as a culture, see the technology of today going, and how will it change our lives? Recent claims of synthetic life being made in a lab for one has the potential in it to entirely transform the way in which humanity will (or will not) move successfully forward in the game of evolution. I for one am entirely excited to be alive in this day and age just to bear witness to the many changes that will occur. I imagine my grandmother must feel a similar sense of awe. So many forms of technology were born during her lifetime. She tells me in her day it cost a nickel to go see a movie. A nickel. That’s how much I made for my first Google Adsense click. It seems not too far off until when time travel will also be part of our reality…at least I hope so. I’ll take that that nickel, and go back in time to treat my Grandma to a movie…er I mean, a picture show.
