A Tail of two Cats: Red Cat & Blue Cat

That tapestry hung on my grandparents wreck room wall when I was 5 years old. I ended up inheriting it and in typical college house fashion, had it hanging as the center piece to the living room of 135 Easton Ave. along with a super classy inflatable moose head. Looking back, I am now convinced that the art you look at daily has an effect upon the mind, or at least this tapestry wove it’s ways into mythology of Reverse Monster. In fact, some might say it provided the first unifying vision to the song writing: It gave the often weird, goofy, and off the wall song topics a universe to exist within, a universe of good vs. evil, a universe of Red Cat vs. Blue Cat.
Upon close stoned examination of this tapestry, various members of Reverse Monster began to experience fantastical visions portraying the great conflicts that fell upon the Cats of The Poker Table, for many great battles were fought between the People of both the Great Cats after the day of the great betrayal…it all must have began something like this: One lazy Sunday evening, beneath a sky that held Hale-Bop comet, the group of feline friends gathered as was their habit to play cards. The usual nibbling of cat nip, admiring each other’s shiny furs, and drinking some gin and tonics went on. Things were as normal as ever. No one expected what came next.

Lately, Red Cat had fallen upon bad times. Money was tight. The wife was nagging him daily: empty the litter, get a job, where was the money going to come from to feed his litter of little red cats…he was desperate. He lost his job at the truck yard. Scratching the thought
post bare, he tried to come up with some money at the weekly poker games. His luck did not improve and he lost all the money he had, ending up losing more than he came with. Red Cat was now in debt to Blue Cat. Frantic, he waited until Blue Cat was on his way home from poker night and jumped him in a dark alley. No one knows exactly how it went down. Blue Cat’s body was never found. That was the last time Blue Cat ever won at poker night. Blue Cat folded in to the great dealer in the sky…

All of the people gathered for Blue Cat’s funeral for he was widely known and loved by all. Blue Cat was generous to the people, always making sure the people had enough to eat, enough work to do, and enough reasons to celebrate and rejoice that they were somehow set here on this earth and given this gift of life. Blue Cat was very wise and always gave out the best advice. Several tales of heroic deeds existed years before his death even, commemorating the grand deeds of the Blue Cat for his people.
Thousands came to weep at the place where Blue Cat was laid to
rest. They came and they wailed and cried out to the heavens, who will protect us now? What will become of our land? It was obvious that something had to be done quickly. It was then that the Ancient Protector was Awoken. It was foretold that at the end of every Age, when times where darkest, that a sweet and gentle hero would be awoken from his slumber and would come unto the People, and lead them back into the Light. And so it was that the most pure and mighty, Jelly Belly answered the calling of the people. Standing before the quivering, grief stricken masses, and he said unto them,”Glaaaaaaaaaaaaaaad to Hellllllllpppp!”, the crowd erupting into an uproar of thanks and relief the shook the trees. Everyone knew that Jelly Belly was a man of Heart and would do his best to protect them. And so it was that the people chose Jelly Belly to lead them in the absence of Blue Cat.

The first order of business, of course, was the find Red Cat, and get some answers. In the chaos following the discovery of Blue Cat’s untimely death, no one had noticed Red Cat slipping away with a handful of cohorts, equally as dastardly and equally as eager to leave the land to escape their sordid pasts. The People could not find Red Cat anywhere, and were growing restless. So soon into the job, Jelly Belly began to sweat. He started to sing one of his favorite songs, for singing usually brought ideas into Jelly Belly’s head as if by magic. He often imagined there were elves in his brain that liked to be sung to and who would bring ideas and inspiration when he sang unto them. And so Jelly Belly sang, he sang from the bottom of his belly…”knick , knack, patty whack, give a dog a bone…” and then it hit him. He knew exactly who to seek out for help. In order to save this great land, Jelly Belly had to find Smart Doggie, for who else to better find a cat, than a dog? The only part remaining was to assemble a party of heroes that would travel with Jelly Belly to find Smart Doggie, and eventually, the Red Cat…who else would stand, and answer the call of the Blue Cat’s good name?

hahahah you guys rule, keep rockin hard!
hey when will you guys come out to ohio to play shows?
hey i must agree with all that is said, the beauty of this group was not that it practiced frequently or could do major pentatonic scales at blazing speedz. it was that the creativity of each individual member was just as important as the other. the raw fuel, the energy of spontaneous fun, was something many in that house had never experienced before. i was happy to be a part of this group, and i share many of the same fond memories. i think a lot of the music shows how versatile people can be, and how creative we all are deep inside if we give ourselves credit and a chance.
anyway-brotherhood of death is a great movie. so campy!
Hey, where’s Green Cat? I used to have all these cds but they all got scratched. I’m so glad you put them online. Can we download them?
