For the past fifteen years, Theo Jansen has been envisioning and designing his “beach animals” out of mostly commonly available materials. Watch the video to see his wonderfully huge, centipede like machine-creatures designed to roam the Dutch coastline, powered by gusts of wind.

These creations are totally amazing to me. Like something out of a dream. What amazes me most is the sense of possessing animation, and self locomotion. It’s as if they are living things. If he made them in miniature as assemble-yourself-kits, I think they could replace kites as the cool thing to do at the beach. I’d buy one.
