A white tipped reef shark, housed in Hungary’s Nyireghaza Centre, experienced an ultra rare “virgin birth”. Named Ibolya by aquarium staff, the shark has remained isolated on her own without any male companion.

The process known as pathenogenesis, where the egg divides without being fertilized by a male, occurs in lower animals such as bees and ants, but the process is extremely rare in higher animals such as sharks. While this process may help females who are unable to find a mate reproduce, the offspring will likely be weaker than if it had been born under usual circumstances due to a lack of genetic diversity.

I can just see some group of loony, femi-wiccans adopting this shark as their new goddess. Aum sharki mami only aum sharki mami only. Go ahead, shave your head, grow your armpit hairs, chop off one boob and feed me to a weakling shark whose teeth will probably fall out when it tries to pierce through my ever so resilient whale blubber. Go ahead! Just go ahead! OK, I have no idea where I am going with this, never mind all that. Chalk it up to bad chum.

Or perhaps it’s transfered misogynist tendencies resulting from an absent father-shark figure.
